KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak claimed trial at the High Court here to three charges of criminal breach of trust and a fourth charge for abuse of power involving RM42 million.
The charges were read to Najib in front of High Court Judge Mohd Sofian Abd Razak.
The charges were initially read to Najib at the Sessions Court, here before it was transferred to the High Court to have a plea recorded.
Attorney-General Tommy Thomas offered bail to be set at RM4 million with two sureties for Najib.
He had told the court despite the charges being non-bailable offences, the prosecution would not object to any bail imposed on Najib.
However, Najib’s lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah pleaded for lower bail as the ex-Prime Minister was a man of high standing in serving the public.
He said Najib has no previous conviction, not even for traffic offences.
Muhammad Shafee applied for bail to be set between RM500,000 and RM800,000, and urged the court to grant bail in the form of property as Najib’s family's accounts were frozen.
He said that Najib’s son and daughter will be his bailors, and that Najib's friends and relatives had tried to raise money for bail, but they failed to raise the RM4 million proposed bail.
The judge then granted a RM1 million bail with two sureties.
The bail was allowed to be paid in two instalments, the first RM500,000 to be paid today and the balance on July 9.
The former Premier was also asked to surrender his two passports to the court.
