Sarawak rabies outbreak widens as two new areas declared infected

KUCHING: Kampung Mapu Kijabu, Tebedu, Serian and Km0.2 of Jalan Sakar/Sebangkoi, Jakar, Sarikei in Sarawak were declared rabies-infected areas yesterday.

This brings to 33 the number of areas across the state with confirmed rabies cases. They comprise the Kuching division (five areas), Samarahan (three), Serian (22), Sri Aman (one), and Sarikei (two).

In a statement, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (JPBNS) Secretariat said the decision to declare the two areas as rabies-infected was made by JPBNS chairman and Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also the state Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Minister.
