KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Malay Contractors Association (PKMM) is calling on its members to strive harder to win open tender projects to show that they are more than capable of competing for big projects in a transparent manner.
Its president, Datuk Mokhtar Samad, said PKMM supported the government’s efforts to create more transparency by having an open tender system for all contractors.
“An open tender system will encourage healthy competition and make Bumiputera contractors work harder,” he said.
“Competition with other races will make it fairer for everyone to win big projects.”
However, Mokhtar said the government must continue to maintain the current system, created by the previous government, which favoured Bumiputera contractors of all classes.
Class F Bumiputera Contractors Association president Tukiman Radion said he also felt that big projects should be offered through open tender.
However, he said, assistance should be given to help Bumiputera contractors compete.
“Bumiputera contractors should be given chances through some allowances or a small number of percentages to succeed in this system,” he said.
“Contractor selection has to adhere to the perimeters of the projects to ensure that they are not delayed or postponed.
“Contractors who cannot deliver should be blacklisted.”
Tukiman also urged the government to raise the work value limit for F class contractors from RM200,000 to RM350,000.
