NSTP chairman Ismail Omar admitted as advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya

KUALA LUMPUR: New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd (NSTP) chairman Tan Sri Ismail Omar has been accepted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya.

Ismail, who is also former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), was admitted during a proceeding before Judge Datuk Nordin Hassan.

Earlier, lawyer Mad Diah Endut as a mover introduced Ismail by presenting his background as a petitioner.

Mat Diah in his speech said Ismail, 65, was born on May 16, 1952, in Kulim, Kedah and was the fifth of 10 children.

He said Ismail was appointed as the ninth IGP on Sept 13 2010.

“Among his involvement in high-profile cases are the Lahat Datu intrusion in 2013 and the murder of cosmetic entrepreneur Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya in 2010.

“After retiring from PDRM on May 17, 2013, Ismail was appointed as the ambassador to France between 2013 and 2015.

“The petitioner (Ismail) also took unpaid leave to complete his degree in 1992 and was awarded a Bachelor Degree in Law with Honours from International Islamic University of Malaysia.

“The petitioner completed his chambering under the guidance of Datuk Khairulr Anuar Rahmat from Khairul A & Co.,” he said.

Khairul Anuar then presented the lawyer’s robe to Ismail as soon as the speech was over.

Nordin then allowed the petition to accept Ismail as an advocate and solicitor.

Meanwhile, Ismail, when met after the proceeding, said he would continue to serve the people as an advocate and solicitor.

“I am looking forward to opening my own law firm but I also considered taking part in non-governmental organisations (NGOs)… we will see.

“This is to ensure I can serve the needy who do not have the opportunity to defend themselves,” he said.
