Water level normal in Penang dams, below half on mainland

GEORGE TOWN: Water level at Penang dams on the island are at normal level.

However the dam on the mainland appears to be below half.

Checks at Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) website found that Air Itam Dam was at 71.5 per cent while Teluk Bahang dam was at 58.2 per cent.

The Mengkuang Dam in Bukit Mertajam recorded 27.3 per cent, slightly higher than the 24 per cent mark reported in March this year.

Penang experienced heavy rain on Friday past midnight until morning.

Efforts to reach PBAPP chief executive officer Datuk Jaseni Maidinsa for comments proven futile.

Several states in the peninsula, Sarawak as well as western parts of Sabah are expected to receive less than average levels of rainfall from August to September due to the current hot weather.

Besides Sabah and Sarawak, the other affected states are Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan Melaka as well as Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

In a statement issued to Bernama recently, the Meteorological Department said the situation was due the current southwest monsoon season which brought heat and caused an increase in temperatures.
