Senior military intelligence officer told to resign over alleged payments in run-up to GE14, claims portal

KUALA LUMPUR: A senior military intelligence officer has been told to resign after allegations surfaced regarding the role the division played in the run-up to the 14th general election (GE14), a news portal reported.

The division, the report claimed, also received RM7 million from then prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak just before the 13th general election.

The Malaysian Insight (TMI), quoting a highly-placed armed forces source, said the senior officer’s last day of work will be Sept 1.

“He was advised to leave and his last day is on Sept 1. Why he was advised to leave, that information is highly confidential,” the source was quoted as saying.

The portal, however, reported that it had learnt that the orders to leave came after Pakatan Harapan (PH) won GE14 and began to investigate 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

The first inkling of such dealings were said to have come from the Sarawak Report website, which claimed that the money was from 1MDB, citing figures it claimed were from the joint task force investigating 1MDB since March 2015, until it was abruptly disbanded.

Another source confirmed with TMI that the senior officer would serve his last day on Sept 1, adding that it was not known who his replacement would be.

The portal also quoted an unnamed Defence Ministry official as saying: “I am not in the position to say anything but what you have heard is what I have heard.”
