PETALING JAYA: Abandoned for 25 years, Highland Towers is scheduled for demolition, as early as next month.
Housing and local government minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said the process of demolishing the apartment blocks would be managed by the Ampang Jaya City Council (MPAJ).
"The Highland Towers Redevelopment Committee has obtained a solution after discussions were held with developers and Insolvency (Insolvency Department) and we have identified all owners.
"We hope that by December, there can be plans for a redevelopment project for Highland Towers," Zuraida said.
She added that they are also in the midst of studying the policies pertaining to abandoned projects.
There is a need to review procedures involved to speed up and simplify the process of acquiring these projects in order for redevelopment to be carried out, she informed.
In August, Zuraida had proposed a suggestion to turn the site where Highland Towers is on, into a recreation park.
This is because the soil structure in the area is not suited for residential projects.
Highland Towers, located in Taman Hillview, Ulu Klang, remains a black mark in Malaysia's history after 48 people died following the collapse of one of its apartment blocks.
The tragedy struck on Dec 11, 1993.
