Typhoon Mangkhut: M'sians in Hong Kong, Macau safe, says Wisma Putra

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said no Malaysians in Hong Kong, Macau or Guangdong, China were injured when Typhoon Mangkhut swept through the region on Sunday and Monday.

In a statement today, Wisma Putra also said that as the affected areas have suffered varying degrees of damage and disruption, Malaysians are advised to defer non-essential travel there for the time being.

Typhoon Mangkhut has weakened and is forecasted to move westward at 20 kilometres per hour towards Guizhou, Chongqing and Yunnan later today, the Hong Kong Observatory said.

“Local authorities, however, have cautioned (the public on) the possibility of flooding due to heavy rain.

“Those who are visiting or living in the affected areas are advised to remain indoors and continue to monitor the latest weather updates, as well as safety advice from local authorities,” Wisma Putra added.

Four people were killed in Guangdong while more than 200 people were injured in Hong Kong and Macau by the super typhoon.

Approximately 2.4 million people were also evacuated in low-lying areas of Guangdong.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Consulate General in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, are closely monitoring the situation and staying in close contact with local authorities for the latest updates and advisories to assist Malaysians in need.

Malaysians who are currently in the affected areas and require consular assistance should contact either the Consulate-General in Hong Kong or Macau respectively.
