PADANG BESAR: A married couple and a police officer were killed when the vehicles they were in crashed during a heavy storm in Bukit Chabang, Padang Besar.
In the 9.30pm incident, the victims were identified as Hafiz Johari, in his 30s, and his wife Siti Asmah Abdul Khalid, 27, both were in a Nissan Murano, while Constable Muhammad Amirul Naim Aziz, 24, drove a Perodua Kancil.
Perlis Police Contingent Headquarters Management Department chief Superintendent Mohd Nor Marzukee Besar said the officer was on his way home in Seriab from his in-laws in Padang Besar.
“The officer brought along his wife and two children, but they survived. The wife and children are being treated at Tunku Fauziah Hospital. The eldest child is in a critical condition,” he said when met at the hospital’s forensic unit.
Meanwhile, Siti Asmah was heavily pregnant with a second child and was due today.
“Doctor tried to save the baby but failed,” he said.
A family member said the couple’s other child was also in the car but she survived. Meanwhile, district police chief Superintendent Muhamad Halim Yatim confirmed the incident.
“We’re still investigating the cause of accident which occurred during heavy rain. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem,” he said.
The case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
