11 'Amazing Spring' actors undergoing treatment at Sunway Medical Centre

KUALA LUMPUR: Eleven actors in the Chinese New Year movie “Amazing Spring” are still receiving treatment at Sunway Medical Centre. Twenty have been discharged.

“All the victims are being given the best treatment and our company is bearing all the costs,” said Jack Lim, the movie’s Malaysian executive producer.

“Producers and directors are on standby at the hospital to make sure we cater to their needs.”

The production team has denied foreign news reports that claimed the crew had accidentally poured fuel on the actors, leaving 31 injured in a fire on the filmset in Bandar Bukit Puchong.

Lim said there were also reports that claimed the actors, who were engulfed in flames, had run into the crowd and injured others.

The director had ordered the special effects team to set a barn, which was doused with petrol, on fire. But, there was a malfunction and the fire spread quickly across the whole set.

“During the 7am incident on Monday (Sept 17), there were at least 10 cameras working on the scene. After assessing the videos, we found the incident happened in just two seconds,” he said.

“We planned to set three buildings on fire and had requested firemen to standby at the scene and ensure that cast members and crew stayed at a safe distance.”

Lim, who is also an actor, said the production team did not expect the fire to spread through the ground and injure actors and crew members.

The injured included local actress Joey Leong, 24, local actor Cedric Loo, 30, and Hong Kong actress Sharon Yeung Pan-pan, 59.

Leong’s legs were badly burnt while Yeung reportedly suffered second-degree burns to her face, right arm and legs.

The film is scheduled for release next year.
