Unity and peace take centre stage at World Peace Day celebration in Putrajaya

PUTRAJAYA: A celebration of peace drew hundreds of Malaysians from all walks of life to gather at the World Peace Day celebration at the Putrajaya Wetlands Park here today.

The event which commemorates the end of the World War I exactly 100 years ago, and promotes world peace was graced by the participation of Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Senator P. Waytha Moorthy.

Addressing the crowd, Senator Waytha Moorthy, who is in charge of National Unity and Social Well-Being in the country, said he was touched by the effort and unity displayed at the World Peace Day celebration.

He said he was impressed by the multiracial and multi-culture presence of Malaysians at the event which clearly displayed a positive sign towards a much better unity among the peace loving people.

“I am also touched by the unified prayer conducted by all the main religions in a united manner. This is what we need to promote world peace and unity amongst Malaysians,” he said, congratulating the Universal Peace Santuary Malaysia for putting together such a noble event ahead of the Global Peace Day.

He emphasised that global peace could only be attained through first finding the inner peace in each individual. Thus, he said it was important to always maintain peace and harmony in any situation.

“I believe global peace can only be achieved if there is individual peace. I am told that the Universal Peace Santuary Malaysia has been promoting people to donate 1 minute of their time at 11.11am on this day to observe 1 minute of silence as individual contribution to global peace. This is unique,” he said, reminding that the power of a noble thought could create a ripple effect.

He said if a critical number of people, for instance 1 per cent of the Malaysian population, could have a single focused intent earnestly, it would manifest throughout the population gradually, over time.

“Therefore, we Malaysians of multiracial, multicultural ethnicity who live in harmony for all these years wish this peace to the world for a long time to come. Each of you can make a difference for yourself and the world. Let us join this journey and let us leave a legacy of peace,” Waytha said before launching the celebration this morning.

The event was attended by leaders of various religions, cultures and natives, NGO’s, student groups as well as social activists from all religions.
