PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry will formulate a new curriculum, which is expected to be rolled out by the end of 2020 or early 2021.
Its minister Dr Maszlee Malik said it would be implemented in stages and based on the recommendations by the ministry’s Policy Committee and National Education Advisory Council (MPPK).
He said the ministry, the Policy Committee and the MPPK would meet Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad first to get his view and deliberation on the matter.
“When I met the prime minister recently, he has agreed and asked (the ministry) to continue striving for the same goal that he (Dr Mahathir) has when he was the education minister, which is to turn Malaysians into a quality and hardworking society,” said Maszlee after visiting Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Presint 16 today.
During a high tea with Malaysians living in Singapore on Monday, Dr Mahathir had touched on the education system, citing the need to revamp the curriculum and change what students learn in schools.
Maszlee added the new curriculum would ensure that the subjects to be taught in school would not burden the students and teachers.
Aside from prepping students for the working world, they would also be exposed to high-level thinking skills which comply to international standards.
On speculations that he was one of the ministers that would be affected by Cabinet reshuffling, Maszlee said they were mere rumours aimed to divert from investigations involving several former Cabinet ministers.
It was reported that the prime minister was expected to reshuffle the Cabinet since he was unhappy with the performance of certain ministers especially those from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).
The news portal claimed that Maszlee and Rural Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Harun were among the names that would be dropped from Cabinet.
