Restaurant owners told to focus on cleanliness in preparing food to prevent typhoid

KOTA BARU: Restaurant owners should focus on cleanliness in preparing food for their customers to prevent typhoid.

State Local Government, Housing and Health committee chairman Dr Izani Husin said there was a slightly increase in typhoid cases in the state lately.

Therefore, he said, the relevant authority must ensure all traders take the anti-typhoid vaccination, besides continuously inspecting the premises.

“More enforcement and inspection needs to be done particulay during the school holidays because many parents will take their children to restaurants. Tourists will also take the opportunity to visit the state to taste Kelantan food.

“We need to change the perception that Kelantan is a dirty state and it must stard fromthe local community itself.

“I say this because l want to educate people on hygiene and food preparation,” he said.

He said this at a Press conference after hearing a briefing and integrated operation on the closure of several food premises by Kota Baru Municipal Council at Dewan Bunga Raya here today.

Also present was the council’s president Tuan Zainal Abidin Tuan Yusuf.

Meanwhile, Tuan Zainal Abidin said so far the council had issued 3,018 licences to food premises in the town area.

“A total of 1,498 premises have been inspected by officers from the health department in a series of operations between July and last month.

“Out of the number, 13 premises were ordered to close while 1,245 others were compounded for various offences,” he said.
