Federal Constitution best formula for racial harmony, says Khaled

PASIR GUDANG: The Federal Constitution is the best formula to maintain racial harmony in the country.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said trouble could arise if anybody did anything to ‘touch’ the Constitution.

“We only want to maintain what is historically ours. Before Malaysia, our country was known as Persekutuan Tanah Melayu,” said Khaled after attending a gathering to protest the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) at Masjid Jamek Pasir Gudang, here.

The rally, which attracted about 300 people, was organised by Majlis Ayahanda Johor (MAJ) and the coalition of Johor non-governmental organisations.

Khaled also said that the rally against ICERD planned for Dec 8 should go ahead even though the government had said it would not rectify the convention.

“This is to show that the Malays are really against ICERD. It is also to make sure that the matter will not resurface in the future,” he said.

MAJ president Moharam Baharom said the gathering was organised to demand that the government express its objection to ICERD in black and white.

“Even though Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said that the government will not rectify the convention, we want the government to bring the matter to Parliament so that there is a concensus to reject it,” he said, adding that the gathering also gave those who couldn’t afford to travel to Kuala Lumpur to take part in the Dec 8 rally to express their objections to ICERD.
