PASIR GUDANG: A tanker driver transporting liquid carbon dioxide crashed into a streetlight on the Pasir Gudang highway early this morning, blocking lanes and causing severe traffic congestion.
Fortunately, there was no cargo leakage reported. Liquid carbon dioxide is used for freezing and chilling of food products. However, exposure to it may cause severe frostbite.
The driver of the tanker was unharmed.
The incident occurred about 4am when the tanker crashed into the streetlight in the centre of the highway and obstructed both lanes of the two-lane highway towards Perling. The accident caused a major traffic backup.
Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Firdaus Abdullah said the driver exited the vehicle on his own and no hazardous leakage was detected.
Meanwhile, in Kluang yesterday, a tanker driver was killed in an early morning crash.
Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Shamsul Amri Shahab said the driver had swerved to avoid a collision with another vehicle. However, the tanker skidded and landed on its side.
The driver was trapped inside the cabin and pronounced dead at the scene in the 3.30am accident.
The motorist was unharmed.
