Sinking land puts residents of Taman Gedung Indah flats at risk

PORT KLANG: About 60 residents of the low-cost flats in Taman Gedung Indah here are living at risk of sinking land caused by possible soil erosion at the base of the five-storey building, built in 2001, which has worsened over the last two years.

Residents’ representative, M. Devendran, 29, said that although the sinking was taking place slowly, it was causing more and more large holes at the base of the building so many residents and tenants were forced to move out of their units fearing for their safety.

He said numerous complaints were made to the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) and developer of the two blocks over the last few years, but there was no response or further action from either party until now.

“At first, staying here, the building was beautiful but it has not been taken care of for a long time and the soil erosion and sinking is causing a lot of damage. The base of the building which is already hollow has attracted a python and stray dogs seeking shelter.

“Like my house, the windows are cracked and the toilet system is also problematic. I myself have slipped due to the water piping system splashing outside the building. This is very dangerous for children,” said Devendran, who has stayed in the flat for the past 13 years, to reporters here today.

Meanwhile, Selangor Housing and Urban Living Committee chairman Haniza Mohamed Talha, who visited the flats today, said the issue would be brought up at the exco meeting on Wednesday, to decide which party should act on the issue.

She said the initial step would be to examine the condition of the building’s structure to identify the extent of its damage before instructing the party responsible to resolve the issue. –- BERNAMA
