Anti ICERD rally: So, what's the estimate?

KUALA LUMPUR: It's a sea of white at Dataran Merdeka as participants take part in a rally to oppose the International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), here, today.

But what's the estimate?

At 2pm, organisers said there were some 300,000 at Dataran Merdeka as rally-goers marched from several locations, among them the National Mosque, Sogo shopping centre and Masjid Jamek.

In a more recent update, the organisers have revised the figure to 500,000 participants at Dataran Merdeka, including Jalan Masjid India, Jalan Silang, Central Market, Bukit Bintang, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Tun Perak.

Police estimate however puts the figure at 55,000 presently, as stated by Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim when contacted by NSTP.

On Tuesday, Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman expected 500,000 protestors to take to the streets for the rally.

Tajuddin made the estimate based on Umno's plans to mobilise 200,000 of its members to the rally, 300,000 from PAS and roughly 50,000 from civil society organisations.

In November, Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said close to a million people would attend the anti ICERD rally.

The figure of one million was later repeated by PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
