Rulers arrive for Conference of Rulers special meeting

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malay rulers arrived at Istana Negara here this morning to attend the Special Meeting to elect the 16th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.

The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah was seen arriving in his motorcade at the gates of the palace at 10am.

This was followed by the Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar and his motorcade two minutes later.

The Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Sultan Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah was seen arriving at 10.12am and the Sultan of Kedah Sultan Sallehuddin Almarhum Sultan Badlishah a minute later.

At 10.17am the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizuddin Shah arrived, and the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail was seen three minutes later.

The motorcade bearing the symbols of the Sultan of Terengganu Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin was seen entering the gate 10.22am.

Six minutes later, the Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir arrived before the main gate of Istana Negara was closed.

No motorcade bearing Kelantan's Sultan Muhammad V was seen.

The rulers will make their decision today on who would ascend the throne as Yang Di-Pertuan Agong for a five-year term in line with Malaysia’s constitutional monarchy.

The Special Meeting will also elect the Deputy Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.

The installation of the 16th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong was mooted after Sultan Muhammad V stepped down from the throne on Jan 6.
