PM, wife attend 'Raj of the East' film premiere

KUALA LUMPUR: After a long day at the Parliament today, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad spent some time at the cinema for the semi-biopic ‘Raj of the East’ film premiere.

Dr Mahathir, who was accompanied by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, arrived at the TGV Cinema, KLCC at 8.30pm.

The film was written, directed and produced by former producer and director of RTM, Tan Sri Adam Kadir.

‘Raj of the East’ revolves around the life of Sir Hugh Clifford, a British colonial administrator who came to Malaya in 1883 at the age of 17 and worked his way from a cadet based in Perak to become the British Resident of Pahang and later Governor of North Borneo.

Adam spent almost five years researching Clifford. The filming began early last year and the post-production work was completed early this year.

In the one-hour-and-forty-minute long film, the young Clifford was portrayed to have fallen for an attractive Chinese widow named Nong after her husband was killed while accompanying Clifford on a trip to Pattani, Thailand.

However, Clifford and Nong’s love story did not have a happy ending as a local sultan took interest in Nong and forced her to marry him and became his queen.

A professional model-turned-actor, Carl Graham plays Clifford and another Englishman, former advertising executive, Ian Braig, plays the older Clifford.

Former Miss Malaysia Chole Chan is the younger Nong, while another former Miss Malaysia and well-known radio personality Yasmin Yusuf plays the older Nong.

Datuk Rahim Razali, Rashidi Ishak and Ellie Suriati are among big names featured in the film. – BERNAMA
