Najib's trial should not be turned into a circus

KUALA LUMPUR: Any move to decide on whether the upcoming trial of Datuk Seri Najib Razak should be broadcast live, should be left for the courts to decide.

This as the matter comes under the jurisdiction of the courts.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said she understood the eagerness of the people wanting to see the trial of the former prime minister, but cautioned that it should not be turned into a circus.

"We understand the people want to know the process of the trial, but we dont want to make it as a circus...let the law take its course", she said.

" Whatever the decision, whether he (Najib) is guilty or not, it is for the court to decide," she said at a press conference after launching KTM Berhad's next Xtra20 commuter service discount card, here, today.

Also present were Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook and Railway Assets Corporation managing director Azhar Ahmad.

Najib faces seven charges over the abuse of RM42 million in SRC International Sdn Bhd funds between August 2011 and March 2015 when he was prime minister.

The High Court will begin its hearing this Wednesday (April 3).

An online petition, which started nine months ago to broadcast the trial live has so far gathered 34,901 signatures.

The organiser of the petition hopes to obtain 35,000 signatures.

Najib had also said he is in favour of a “live” broadcast of his SRC trial.

“I will support the ‘live’ broadcast because it will help transparency and ensure the ‘Rule of Law’ is followed.

“The rakyat have the right to know the truth,” Najib wrote on his Facebook page yesterday.
