SHAH ALAM: The formation of Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) is to ensure that there will be no abuse of power within the police force.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said IPCMC was not aimed to penalise the police, but to take action against any form of misconduct.
"The new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) agrees to the formation of the IPCMC.
"We do not want to penalise the police, but we want to ensure that there is no misconduct in an institution that is given such big powers," he said in his speech at the 2019 DAP National Conference here, today.
Lim, who is also Finance Minister, said police personnel need not worry about the IPCMC as long as they conduct their duties lawfully and responsibly.
Newly-minted IGP Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador yesterday said that he supported the government's wish to improve the effectiveness, welfare and image of the police.
Hamid, as quoted in a news portal yesterday, said he would ensure the police would get the "best outcomes from all aspects" of the IPCMC while the public would feel protected and receive the best services.
In September last year, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that the IPCMC would replace the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission.
The IPCMC is a police oversight body proposed by a royal commission of inquiry in 2005 to improve the police force, following a spate of death in custody cases.
In March, former IGP Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said a task force in the police force had been set up to collect feedback on IPCMC.
He revealed on Thursday that the proposal was rejected by both serving and retired policemen.
