Malaysia's GDP to see positive growth this year

PUTRAJAYA: The government is optimistic that Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) will see further positive growth, this year.

Economic Affairs Ministers Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said this was based on the level of confidence among investors on the Malaysian economy.

He said the latest statistics showed that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Domestic Direct Investment (DDI) were positive

“So, this shows that the level of confidence is back in the system. We should be able to retain the targeted growth,” he said after attending Malaysia Baharu’s first anniversary celebration at the Putrajaya International Convention Center (PICC) today.

On whether there would be more mega projects, Azmin said the government would give precedence to important projects.

“We have started some initiatives. As mentioned by the prime minister we reviewed all the mega projects.

“We want to set our priorities right because at that point of time we don’t have the capacity to continue.

“Now Alhamdulillah the economy is back on track and we should be able to continue with some of the major infrastructure projects. Certainly infrastructure is very important. Public transportation is also very crucial,” he added.

Azmin adds that it had to be ensured that governance was in place to ensure there would be no corruption.

“And the whole process must be transparent and above board,” he added.

On Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s one year address, he said the prime minister’s definition of Malaysia Baharu was a new administration based on the principles of accountability, integrity and caring for the people.

“It is hoped that the new administration will be able to recover the nation’s economy and give Malaysia a new energy to rise again as ‘Harimau Asia’,” he added.
