SANDAKAN: Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has congratulated DAP on retaining the Sandakan parliamentary seat in today’s by-election.
"On behalf of the Parti Warisan Sabah-led state government, I would like to congratulate Vivian Wong Shir Yee on her resounding victory in the Sandakan by-election today.
"Had the voter turnout been higher, I am confident her majority would have been even greater," the Warisan president said in a statement.
Mohd Shafie said Sandakan voters have once again shown their undivided support for the Warisan-led government.
"The win is also a very clear indication that Umno no longer has any (hold) on Muslim voters, who this time around, came out very strongly in support of the DAP candidate," he said.
Mohd Shafie added that he expects Vivian to continue the legacy of her father, Datuk Stephen Wong, who had been a very dedicated Member of Parliament for Sandakan.
He said he himself will help guide Vivian as she undertakes her responsibilities as a young politician.
"We will continue to deliver our promises. Sandakan will definitely see better days ahead, especially with the works on the airport extension project expected to start any day now; as well as the decision to turn the Palm Oil Industrial Cluster into a furniture hub.
"This will augur well for tourism and (create) thousands of job opportunities," Mohd Shafie added.
