Agong likely to wear late father's tanjak, sampin at installation ceremony

PEKAN: Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah is likely to wear his late father’s tanjak (a traditional Malay male headgear) and sampin (specialised sarong worn with Baju Melayu) at his installation as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara on July 30.

Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah said she wanted her husband to wear the royal attire worn by the late Paduka Ayahanda Sultan Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah during his installation as the 7th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on April 26, 1979.

Tunku Azizah travelled to Istana Abu Bakar, here, today, to look for the tanjak and samping and bring them back to Istana Negara to be presented to Sultan Abdullah.

“I want to propose to His Majesty to wear this attire in honour of his father (Sultan Ahmad Shah)... but of course, he will have to wear a new muskat (the King’s royal attire) as the existing one does not fit him well,” she said at the Sultan Abu Bakar Museum, here, today.

The government has declared July 30 as a national public holiday in conjunction with the installation of Sultan Abdullah as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Sultan Abdullah will also celebrate his 60th birthday on that day.

The Queen said she had previously failed to locate her late father-in-law’s tanjak, sampin, muskat and bengkung.

“I have been looking for the tanjak because only the muskat is kept here (Sultan Abu Bakar Museum), but nobody seems to know...

“So, today, I travelled to Istana Abu Bakar and found that the tanjak was there, along with the sampin and the bengkung,” she said.

Tunku Azizah said the tanjak worn by the late Paduka Ayahanda Sultan Ahmad Shah was special because it had the coat of arms of Malaysia in the front.

“I will ask for the tanjak and sampin to be rewoven and beautified for reuse,” she added. - Bernama
