Disgruntled anglers could have caused diesel spill in Sungai Selangor

KUALA SELANGOR: Anglers who were told off by workers guarding a pontoon in Sungai Selangor could have carried out an act of sabotage that caused the diesel oil spill.

Selangor police chief Datuk Noor Azam Jamaludin said Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd’s contractor, Two-B Machineries Sdn Bhd, had lodged a police report on their encounter with the anglers who were fishing near a pontoon in the river two to three days ago.

“Workers who were guarding the pontoon had told the anglers to leave the area.

“However, the anglers refused. They had probably wanted to stay there due to the abundance of fish under the pontoon.

“The complainant then discovered the diesel oil spill and found that the hose clip had come off.

“There were two diesel-filled drums with a capacity of 200 litres each.

“The leakage amounted to 100 litres from one of the drums.

“So, there is a huge possibility that they had been sabotaged,” Azam said at the Sungai Selangor Phase 2 Water Treatment Plant today.

He said the workers spotted the anglers leaving on a motorcycle, but were unable to record its licence plate number.

Azam said police were investigating the case under Section 430 of the Penal Code for mischief by injury to works of irrigation or by wrongfully diverting water, which carries a jail term of between five to thirty years, a fine or both.

Azam said the anglers were fishing in an open area and had not trespassed into any restricted areas.

He said his investigators would work with Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd and the authorities on the case.
