Assemblyman calls for probe into sale of Ghost Smoke candy

GEORGE TOWN: Bayan Lepas state assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz has called on the authorities to take stringent action on the sale of the Ghost Smoke candy among students in the state.

He added that the situation looked worrying and if uncurbed, there was the possibility that it could lead to addiction.

"We do not want our future generation to be consuming such food. I urge the local authorities to investigate the matter," he said when contacted today.

Earlier, Azrul shared a social media posting on a student at a school in Bayan Lepas who was caught possessing the candy packet yesterday.

"I was told there are more cases. The students claimed they bought it at a sundry stall nearby,” he told reporters today.

It was reported that parents in the state were concerned over the sale of the Ghost Smoke candy that emits smokes, similar to inhaling cigarettes.

The matter came to light when a teacher in Papar, Sabah posted a video on Facebook showing three kids mimicking the act of smoking using a packet of vape-like candy.

Following that, the Health Ministry and Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs have initiated an investigation to look into the sale of Ghost Smoke candy.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was also reported to have called for the sale of Ghost Smoke candy to stop immediately.
