SEREMBAN: The Transport Ministry will look into requiring all e-hailing motorcycle and delivery services to undergo the Commuting Safety Support Programme (CSSP).
The CSSP, a joint programme conducted by the Social Security Organisation (Socso) and Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) is aimed at reducing accident rates among motorcyclists.
Minister Anthony Loke said the ministry was reviewing the safety aspects of the service before it received the green light from the Cabinet .
“Although some have expressed concern over the safety aspect, however we see this as an opportunity for us to develop a safety or regulatory framework that would change the way motorcyclists ride motorcycles.
“We never had a specific rule to control delivery services using motorcycles although such a service has been available for the past 20 years.
“This safety framework is not only applicable for e-hailing motorcycle services, but also for other delivery services using the motorcycle, including food, documents and package (deliveries).
“When we give them (e-hailing motorcycle service) the nod, it doesn’t mean they can do it without any rules as we want to take the same approach in managing e-hailing car services,” he said.
Loke said this after launching the CSSP programme at Wisma TNB here today.
Present were Socso chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed and Miros director-general Dr Siti Zaharah Ishak.
CSSP which has been in place since 2017 provides management training for safe travel and intervention programmes to increase awareness and skills in road safety specifically for motorcyclists.
The programme, which saw the participation of 20 employers around the Klang Valley in 2017, has since expanded to 95 and 70 employers respectively last year and this year.
Loke said though the CSSP targeted motorcyclists traveling to work due to their high accident rate, e-hailing motorcycle and delivery service riders must also be exposed to the programme.
“I believe that with the programme, the government and industry will be able to work together to ensure the smoothness and sustainability of the programme to improve riders’ safety,” he said.
