Over 100 Kongres Maruah Melayu participants struck with food poisoning

SHAH ALAM: The Kongres Maruah Melayu (Malay Dignity Congress) event held at the Malawati Stadium here, today, ended on a sour note when up to 118 attendees began showing symptoms of food poisoning.

All victims had consumed fare provided by the organiser of the event, Bernama reported.

As dozens of people began to present with symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting, an 11.15am call was made to the Selangor Health Department, which despatched an emergency team to the venue.

“Following an examination, 27 of (the victims) were classified as semi-critical; and 91 were (judged to be) in stable condition,” said Selangor Health director Datuk Dr Khalid Ibrahim.

He added that the victims were rushed to the Emergency Departments of the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang and the Shah Alam Hospital, beginning at 11.50am.

The Kongres Maruah Melayu – held to discuss problems faced by the Malay community – had been organised by Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).
