IPOH: The number of flood victims in three districts in the state namely Hilir Perak, Larut Matang and Selama, and Batang Padang has increased to 278 people involving 81 families as of noon 12pm today.
State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat spokesperson said that the increasing number of flood victims was a result of the continuous downpour since yesterday.
“The number of flood victims seeking shelter at temporary evacuation centres rose to 278 people compared to 194 people from 58 families this morning.
“A new relief centre has been opened at the Surau Kampung Jawa Trong Community Hall in the Larut Matang and Selama district, accommodating a total of 17 victims from six families,” he said in a statement today.
The spokesperson said the Hilir Perak district recorded the highest number of victims with 180 people from 48 families.
“The flood victims are mostly from Kampung Batu 9, Kampung Batu 7, Lorong Besar Batu Tujuh Setengah, Lorong Sidang Osman and Batu 8.
“These villagers are currently seeking temporary shelter at Sekolah Kebangsaan Changkat Jong, Teluk Intan.”
He said the number of flood victims at the Kampung Sungai Klah Baru Community Hall in the Batang Padang district remained with 81 people from 27 families from Kampung Sungai Klah, Sungkai here.
Meanwhile, 21 flood victims that were accommodated at Kampung Malau Community Hall in Lenggong were allowed to go home and the community hall was officially closed at 10.30am today.
The continuous downpour on Friday also caused a 100 metre northbound stretch of Jalan Simpang Pulai-Cameron Highlands to be closed to all vehicles due to a landslide which occurred at 12.30am today.
Perak Public Utilities and Infrastructure, Agriculture and Plantation Committee chairman Abdul Yunus Jamahri said repair work on the affected slopes along the road would begin on Monday.
“Work instructions have been issued to Pintas Utama Sdn Bhd (PUSB) for the repair work by adopting the ‘terramesh wall and backfill’ methods,” he said in a statement today.
