KUALA LUMPUR: China is willing to help Malaysian authorities cripple transnational crime syndicates involving its citizens here, said China’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Bai Tian.
He said the offer of help includes the sharing of intelligence on online investment scams, such as the one busted by the Immigration Department in Cyberjaya, recently.
“We are ready to offer our assistance in terms of identifying (the 680 Chinese) suspects; and we are ready to cooperate with Malaysian law enforcement agencies in any cross-border crime crackdown,” Bai Tian added.
The ambassador said all suspects in the Cyberjaya case should be punished by the laws of this country if they are convicted.
“We fully support this operation because… we (are against) Chinese citizens committing crimes abroad... We think they should be punished by the (domestic) laws,” Bai Tian said.
He added that so far, the embassy has not been contacted by any family member of the suspects arrested in the Cyberjaya operation.
On Nov 20, authorities foiled an online investment scam syndicate with the arrests of 680 Chinese nationals who were based in Cyberjaya.
The suspects were nabbed after the Immigration Department raided a six-storey building, believed to be the call centre of the operations which had been targeting victims in China.
All suspects entered Malaysia using social visit passes, and almost all could not produce their passports or identification documents after being arrested.
They are currently under a 14-day remand order. – Bernama
