Malaysian victim in White Island volcanic eruption is Australian permanent resident

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian who was reported to be critically injured in the White Island volcanic eruption is a permanent resident of Australia.

Wisma Putra in a statement today said it received the confirmation from New Zealand Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry emergency coordination centre which said only one Malaysian was involved in the incident on Dec 9.

It said the victim, whose identity was withheld, wss in a critical condition, and would be transferred to Sydney, Australia, for further treatment.

“The victim is scheduled to be repatriated to Sydney on Dec 13. However, this will be based on an evaluation by officials at Christchurch Hospital,” said the statement.

The Foreign Ministry expressed its utmost appreciation and gratitude to the New Zealand government and the country’s local authorities for the assistance rendered to all victims.
