Northeast monsoon: No sea activity allowed in Kelantan

KOTA BARU: Fishermen and boat tour operators are not allowed to go out to sea following high tides and rough sea.

State deputy police chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Abdullah Mohammad Piah said the weather might pose a danger as the Northeast monsoon season had yet to end.

"I was told that the tides at several coastal locations in Kelantan are very high and the sea is also rough. It is just not suitable for any sea activity.

"Police have been told to monitor the situation closely and act immediately if they come across any such activity," he told reporters here today.

Apart from that, Abdullah said police stations located by the sea were also told to keep watch for signs of waves hitting their areas.

"Members of the public are advised to follow the directives given by the authorities to leave their homes.

"This is for their own safety ..... we (police) do not want anything bad to happen to them," he said.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department recently issued a ‘yellow’ weather warning alert for several areas in five states beginning on Saturday.

Heavy rainfall is expected in Pekan, Pahang; and Segamat, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Pontian, Kulai and Johor Baru in Johor.

Strong winds of up to 50 kilometres per hour are also forecast in coastal areas of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor and Sarawak.

It added that waves could reach 3.5 metres high, causing sea water to overflow into estuaries and coastal areas.
