PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said the nine audio recordings played to the media at a press conference today were sent to the commission anonymously.
“We will not reveal how we received it, and I don’t know why it was only sent now,” MACC chief commissioner Latheefa Koya said, adding that the material was received all at once.
She said MACC received various kinds of information from anonymous persons in numerous forms, including poison pen letters, thumbdrives and CDs.
“Our job is not to find out so much who gave us the information, but what the information is.”
Latheefa said an accompanying document indicated the dates of the nine recordings, and the MACC found that it correlated with certain events that happened at the time.
The total 50 minutes of recorded conversations were between several people, including former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Latheefa said the recordings raised serious issues about obstruction of justice, compromising national security, and fabrication of false evidence.
The recordings took place between Jan 5 and July 29, 2016.
“We will hand over the materials to the relevant authorities for investigation,” she added.
