215 killed on Malaysian roads in 14 days

KUALA LUMPUR: Up to 215 people were killed in road accidents nationwide in the 14 days of Op Selamat, which was launched on Jan 18, in conjunction with the Chinese New Year holiday travel rush.

Motorcyclists and pillion riders topped the list of fatalities at 139, Bernama reported.

Overall, 21,941 crashes – 191 of which were fatal – were recorded across the country, with Selangor leading the list of accidents at 6,162 cases, followed by Johor (3,367), Kuala Lumpur (2,469), Perak (1,833), Penang (1,761), Negri Sembilan (1,070) and Kedah (1,003).

Other states with road accident cases in the triple digits during the two-week period are Pahang (936), Melaka (821), Sarawak (713), Sabah (663), Kelantan (466) and Terengganu (424).

“Up to 373,212 summonses were issued, of which 235,966 were for six offences – use of mobile phones while driving, beating traffic lights, driving over speed limits, using emergency lanes, cutting queues, and overtaking on double lines,” Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Azisman Alias said in a statement last night.

Op Selamat ended on Saturday.
