KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau has brushed off speculations that ex-PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali will be joining the party.
Lau said he had yet to receive a membership application form from Mohamed Azmin.
"Give the (application) form to me if you have it," he said when reporters posed the question to him at the Gerakan headquarters, here, today.
Asked if Gerakan would accept Mohamed Azmin as its member, he said the party would welcome whoever agrees with the party’s ideology as well as follows and respects the party’s constitution.
"We will accept as long as they put the people first. If they uphold the party ideology, anyone, regardless either from the new or old government, opposition or NGOs as long as you are fighting for the people’s rights, we will support (them).
"Our priority is the rakyat must come first, this is our stance. The people want to see stability. We have to make sure our country is stable and economically sound,” he said.
Mohamed Azmin and PKR vice president Zuraida Kamaruddin were sacked from the party, with nine other PKR MPs leaving the party to form an independent bloc in Parliament.
Speculation of Mohamed Azmin joining Gerakan surfaced since then.
Asked if Gerakan would consider rejoining Barisan Nasional (BN), he replied:" No, we have left BN."
Lau also said it was not important who would be the next prime minister following Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s resignation today.
Dr Mahathir submitted his resignation letter to the King at 1pm and had also quit as chairman of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).
"As what we have said before, we should put politics aside first. Who will become the (next) prime minister is not important. What is more important is to focus on the country’s economy and the Covid-19 outbreak. Everybody must come together on these Issues.”
Lau said currently efforts should be made to stabilise the situation and get everyone on board to look after the country.
