IGP: Stop speculating and spreading fake news

KUALA LUMPUR: Police has warned the public against spreading or creating any form of fake news and speculations about the country’s latest political development.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador said the police would take action against any individual who harbours intention to create public disharmony and disorder.

“The democratic processes are being followed. I ask all parties to be patient, including all the top political leaders, supporters and the public,” he said when met by reporters at the Istana Negara main entrance.

Hamid was earlier granted an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah at Istana Negara, to brief His Majesty about the country’s latest security status, following Tun Dr Mahathir’s resignation as prime minister today.

“I have briefed the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on public safety and national security.”

Hamid said the police had yet to receive any threats or issues that could disrupt harmony, and urged the public to resume their usual daily routine.

He, however, said police had been and would continue to monitor the situation to ensure a safe and peaceful environment was maintained at all times.

Earlier, a poster calling for a street protest at Dataran Merdeka tomorrow (Feb 25) went viral on social media and text messaging applications.
