Malaysian Bar looks forward to working with new AG Idrus Harun

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Bar welcomes the appointment of Federal Court judge Tan Sri Idrus Harun as the new Attorney-General.

Its president Abdul Fareed Abdul Gafoor said Idrus boast wide experience and exposure from his many years in the Attorney-General’s Chambers and later on the bench.

“Idrus was also formerly the Solicitor General prior to his elevation to the Court of Appeal and then to the Federal Court.

“The Bar believes that Tan Sri (Idrus) would be able to carry out his duties efficiently and effectively to uphold the rule of law without fear or favour.

“The Bar wishes to work alongside with Tan Sri (Idrus) in all matters related and of mutual interest to both institutions,” Abdul Fareed told the New Straits Times.

The Prime Minister’s Office today announced the appointment of 65-year-old Idrus, who was born in Sanglang, Kedah, to the post in a statement today.

“It is please to be informed that in accordance with in accordance with Clause (5) of Article 145 of the Federal Constitution, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented the application by Tan Sri Tommy Thomas to shorten his services as Attorney-General (AG) effective February 28, 2020.

“In accordance with Clause (1) of Article 145 of the Federal Constitution, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented the appointment of Federal Court Judge Tan Sri Idrus Harun as the new AG for a period of two years effective Mar 6,” the statement read.
