PUTRAJAYA: The government, together with telecommunication companies, will provide free internet data usage to their respective customers throughout the Movement Control Order (MCO) period beginning April 1.
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the government has allocated RM600 million under the Prihatin Rakyat Economic Stimulus Package for this initiative.
“For the telecommunication and multimedia industry, several special packages will be introduced with the cooperation of telecommunication services companies.
“Among the packages that will be introduced is free internet data usage to all customers valued throughout the period of MCO at RM600 million beginning April 1.
“Apart from that, an additional RM400 million will be invested to improve network coverage and capabilities in order to provide high availability and quality telecommunications networks,” the prime minister said today.
The government has also set aside RM530 million to provide further discounts of between 15 per cent and 50 per cent in stages for electricity bills with a maximum limit of 600 kilowatt per month.
The amount, said Muhyiddin, was an additional amount to the RM500 million provision announced during the previous economic stimulus to provide 15 per cent discount in electricity bills to the tourism sector and two per cent discount (in electricity bills) for the commercial, industrial, agriculture and households in Peninsular beginning April 1.
“A discount of 50 per cent (of electricity bills) for electricity usage below 200 kilowatt, 25 per cent for electricity usage from 201 until 300 kilowatt and 15 per cent for usage from 301 until 600 kilowatt.
“These discounts will take effect for a period of six months beginning next month. Meanwhile, the two per cent discount (on electricity bills for the sectors involved announced under the previous economic stimulus package) can continue to be enjoyed by all households.” he said.
