Insurance associations pledge RM8 million to Covid-19 test fund

KUALA LUMPUR: Insurance policy holders most at risk of Covid-19 infection and have undergone tests at Health Ministry certified labs are entitled to a RM300 reimbursement per person.

Policy holders who took the test on the advice of a general practitioner after March 27 can make the claim via the Covid-19 Test Fund (CTF) website, www.MyCTF.my launched yesterday.

The Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (Liam), General Insurance Association of Malaysia (Piam) and Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA) have jointly pledged RM8 million for the fund in support of the ministry's efforts to conduct more Covid-19 tests for Malaysians.

In a joint statement, they said the CTF would benefit at least 26,000 policy holders and Liam is leading the initiative with a RM5 million contribution while Piam and MTA have pledged RM2 million and RM1 million, respectively.

"The fund will subsidise the cost of the test for policy holders most at risk of Covid-19, enabling more Malaysians to undergo the test, including healthcare frontliners, patient under investigation (PUI) and others at risk of being infected.

"The reimbursement is up to a maximum of RM300 per test (one reimbursement per individual). Based on this amount, the fund is able to support more than 26,600 tests," read the statement.

"We quickly set up this nationwide initiative in support of the Ministry of Health and are targeting to conduct more than 26,600 tests on Malaysians. This would further help the nation contain the Covid-19 virus from spreading,” said Liam president, Loh Guat Lan.

Loh said all groups or individual medical and health insurance policy holders and takaful certificate holders referred by registered doctors to undergo Covid-19 tests at recognised private labs listed on the Health Ministry’s Covid-19 website are eligible.

She added that policy and certificate holders can submit their claims online via the portal from Saturday, 11 April 2020 onwards.

MTA chairman, Muhammad Fikri Mohamad Rawi said the establishment of MyCTF is part of the industry’s contributions to encourage more policy holders to undergo Covid-19 tests and minimise the impact of the outbreak.

Piam chairman Antony Lee added that in these times of crisis, general insurers and reinsurers are rallying together to answer the call for help.

"As with past challenges the insurance industry is confident we will get through this together and our country will emerge stronger from it,” he said.

A nationwide 24/7 toll free call centre is currently operational since the launch of the CTF and the public can make general enquiries through the hotlines numbers 15500 or 1-300-22-11-88.
