KUALA LUMPUR: Online zakat (tithe) payment for this Ramadan has been give the green light in view of the ongoing Movement Control Order (MCO).
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri said the online mode of payment introduced by the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) was aimed at lessening the burden of Muslims as well as taking into account the current circumstances.
He added that the traditional means of collecting tithe would still be in place through 919 amil (individuals tasked to collect tithe payments), with their locations to be determined by the MCO and the government.
“The amil have also been equipped with QR Code SnapNPay to enable cashless transaction. They are also encouraged to promote their respective QR codes as creatively as possible,” he said.
“MAIWP is in the midst of considering drive through (tithe) payment at mosques which is subject to approval from the authorities and standard operating procedure (SOP)," he said.
He said this after the launch of the Al-It'am Kitchen Program, Zakat Online and Pilgrimage Aid, Ihya Ramadan and the Federal Territory level Cleanliness programme here today.
Tithe paid in the month of Ramadan, or better known as "zakat fitrah" is obligatory upon every Muslim male and female individuals who can afford it, based on certain conditions and can be paid in the month of Ramadan until the morning before performing Aidilfitri prayers on the first of Syawal.
