MyWatch chairman charged with circulating offensive remarks on cops [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Crime Watch Task Force (MyWatch) chairman Datuk R. Sri Sanjeevan was charged at the Sessions Court here today with circulating offensive remarks against the police.

However, Sanjeevan, 36, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him before judge Ahmad Kamar Jamaluddin.

For the first charge, Sanjeevan is alleged, via his Twitter account under the name @SanjeevanSS, to have made an offensive remark with an intent to hurt others at 4.20pm on March 18.

He is also alleged to have committed the same offence via another Twitter account under the name @My_CrimeWatch at 4.20pm on May 16.

The remarks were read at the Communication Office and Commercial Crime Investigation Department, Bukit Aman police headquarters on April 7 and May 17.

The offence falls under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000, or up to a years' jail, or both, if convicted; and a fine of RM1,000 for every day the offence is repeated after conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Syamimi Farhana Muhammad A Aziz asked the court to set RM40,000 bail for both offences.

However, the accused's counsel, S. Preakas, pleaded for minimum bail of between RM2,000 and RM3,000, as his client had given his full cooperation during police investigations.

The court set RM10,000 bail in one surety and fixed July 23 for mention.
