Kia Spectra set on fire following Tasek Gelugor accident

TASEK GELUGOR: A Kia Spectra, which was involved in an accident with two motorcycles along Jalan Ara Kuda here on Thursday night, was set on fire four hours after the incident.

The Fire and Rescue Department was alerted to the fire at about 2am on Friday.

It is not immediately known who set the vehicle ablaze.

It is believed that the car was set alight by individuals who suspected the driver of being under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred.

However, the driver had earlier passed a breathalyser test and police had ruled out drunk driving in the case.

Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said one suspect in the act or arson has been identified.

"We expect to make an arrest soon. The case is being investigated as mischief by fire under Section 435 of the Penal Code.

"We advise the people not to take matters into their own hands, and certainly not to believe and share false information about an accident. Come to us with information and we will act on it accordingly."

Noorzainy also said that police will investigate a false report about the accident currently circulating online.

The accident on Thursday occurred as the driver of the Kia Spectra, who had just delivered vegetables in Kubang Semang, was returning to her home in Bumbung Lima at 9.50pm.

She was avoiding crashing into an animal which appeared in her lane when her vehicle skidded.

"This caused her to swerve into the opposite lane. At the same time, the two motorcyclists failed to brake in time and crashed into the right side of the car.

"Both motorcyclists sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Bukit Mertajam Hospital for treatment, before being transferred to the Seberang Jaya Hospital.

"The car driver, 56, then presented herself at the district police headquarters to lodge a report. Her breathalyser test came back negative for alcohol," he added.
