MCMC slaps five telcos with fines totalling RM4.6 million

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) issued 92 compounds totalling RM4.6 million to five telecommunication companies (telcos) as of the second quarter of this year.

The number of fines exceeds the 26 compounds imposed last year, which amounted to RM960,000.

The MCMC said the compounds were issued against telcos for several offences under Section 105(3) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"The compounds involve offences related to performance over resolving billing complaints, performance on non-billing complaint resolution, as well as standard performance related to customer hotlines," the commission said in a statement today.

Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd received the highest number of compounds at 31, amounting to RM1.55 million, followed by Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd (28 compounds, RM1.4 million) and Celcom Axiata Bhd (24 compounds, RM1.2 million).

TT dotCom Sdn Bhd and Telekom Malaysia Bhd were slapped with five compounds amounting to RM250,000, and four compounds worth RM200,000, respectively.

"The increase in the number of compounds issued up to the second quarter of this year reflects the firmness and commitment by MCMC to ensure quality services, strengthened confidence among users, as well as the sustainability of the communication and multimedia industry in the interests of the people in the long-term," the statement said.
