Retired teacher's yoghurt drink a hit

KOTA BARU: Religious school teacher Abdul Rashid Ibrahim lived in Egypt for more than 15 years from 1967, and one of the things he enjoyed there was the yoghurt drink.

So when he returned to Malaysia in 1982, Abdul Rashid, 73, craved for the drink, but he could not find it here. Then the idea to make the sugar-free yoghurt drink himself came to him.

"I decided to make my own yoghurt using a recipe from a friend in Egypt. I did not expect to succeed on my first try," said Rashid at his home in Wakaf Stan, Kubang Kerian here, yesterday.

When his students at Maahad Muhammadi Perempuan saw him drinking his yoghurt, they wanted to try it.

"Once they tried it, almost all of them loved it and suggested that I should sell it," said the father of five, aged 24 to 36.

"I started a part-time business 20 years ago as I was still a teacher and went full-time selling the yoghurt after retiring in 2004."

He said his yoghurt was made of fresh milk and his own secret ingredients.

He said when he first started out, he would produce about 24 litres of yoghurt at a time, but now he could make up to 240 litres a day to meet demand.

He said he created five fruit flavours for his yoghurt — grape, strawberry, apple, mango and honeydew. The strawberry flavour is a bestseller. - BERNAMA
