Those returning from Sabah not required to undergo quarantine

KUALA LUMPUR: Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said individuals returning from Sabah would not be required to undergo the 14-day mandatory quarantine.

"However, it is compulsory for those with symptoms to take the swab test upon arrival at entry points. Those without symptoms are also encouraged to undergo the Covid-19 test, but it's not mandatory," he told a press conference today.

Asked if the government would consider making Covid-19 tests mandatory for those returning from Lahad Datu and Tawau districts, he answered in the negative.

Both areas have been classified as red zones recently following an increase in the number of those who tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

"These districts are huge, and maybe those returning from Sabah are not in the locality identified by the Health Department or they may not have any close contact with people from high-risk villages.

"Kinabatangan is as big as Pahang state and I have visited a constituency that is as big as Negri Sembilan, so in general, no mandatory quarantine is required, but we may have a different set of rules for those who have visited high-risk localities," he said.

On the election campaign for the upcoming Sabah polls, Ismail Sabri said house-to-house visits should be avoided.

"Although it is allowed to conduct house-to-house campaign, I advise against it. If needed, only one or two individuals can enter the house for campaigning, but physical distancing must be enforced.

"For campaign activities, only 30 people are allowed at any one time," he said.

Today is early voting for the Sabah state polls, with the remaining voters expected to cast their ballots this Saturday.
