Works Ministry to moot new plan for construction industry

KUALA LUMPUR: Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said the Works Ministry will be presenting a new development plan to enhance construction industry safety to the Cabinet soon.

"From our side, we have given some inputs to enhance workplace safety for the proposal," he said, after the work handing over ceremony for the new Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) mayor here today.

Commenting on the recent freak accident at the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) site, Annuar said that public safety must not be taken for granted.

"Public safety must always be the utmost priority for DBKL.

"In fact, I even told the previous KL mayor Datuk Nor Hisham (Ahmad Dahlan) that we should review the standard operating procedures (SOPs) on workplace safety for the city," he said.

Meanwhile, Annuar reassured that the ministry would look into the soil erosion case that occurred at Persiaran Syed Putra last night.

"I have not received the reports yet, but we will take immediate action to resolve the issue," he said.

The earth embankment near a three-storey apartment in Persiaran Syed Putra collapsed following a heavy downpour.

Eleven residents had to vacate their homes after DBKL inspected the building and found that it was not safe to be inhabited.

Police personnel at the soil erosion site told the New Straits Times that the police, fire department and DBKL were currently investigating the matter and a press statement would be issued soon.
