Kepala Batas school ordered to close for a week

KEPALA BATAS: Sekolah Kebangsaan Paya Keladi here has been ordered to close for a week.

The temporary closure from tomorrow comes after a student from the school tested positive for Covid-19.

The order was issued by the Penang Education Department.

Its director Abdul Rashid Abdul Samad said the matter was reported to the department today.

He, however, did not elaborate on the active case.

"Since there is one confirmed Covid-19 case in the school, we have ordered it to close for a week beginning tomorrow.

"The school will reopen on Nov 11," he told the New Straits Times when contacted.

The school has a total of 53 teachers and staff and 825 pupils.

This is the third school to be closed in Penang over the past month.

On Oct 20, SK Seri Sentosa in Jalan Victoria, Nibong Tebal was closed for a week when a pupil tested positive for Covid-19.

On Oct 1, SK Permatang Janggus in Penaga, Kepala Batas was closed for eight days after a teacher contracted Covid-19.

It was reported that the female teacher, in her 40s, was unwell while at school and had sought treatment at a hospital in Kedah.

She is believed to be the wife of a politician from Kedah, who had gone campaigning during the recent Sabah state election.
