KUALA LUMPUR: The annual monsoon season in the country is expected to start from Wednesday and will end in March next year, said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia).
In a statement, it said that during the season, four to six episodes of significant heavy rain periods were expected to occur.
"During the early phase of the monsoon from this month to December, episodes of heavy rain are expected to take place in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang.
"From January next year, episodes of heavy rain are forecast to concentrate in Pahang, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak.
"The second phase of the monsoon will start at the end of January next year and the weather is expected to be quite dry in Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Perlis and Kelantan," said METMalaysia in a statement today.
It also said that during the season, continuous heavy rain for several days may cause the occurrence of floods at low lying and flood prone areas.
METMalaysia said that there was a risk of flooding getting worse if heavy downpour coincided with the high tide phenomenon and storms.
It added that continuous and heavy winds from the North East direction would also cause choppy seas and high waves in the waters off South China Sea.
"The public is reminded to prepare and brace for the monsoon season and always be alert of heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas warnings issued by the METMalaysia," it said.
The warnings will be conveyed via METMalaysia's official website, its social media platforms and the myCuaca mobile app.
