Kota Baru village hit by high tide

KOTA BARU: About 15 houses in Kampung Pantai Kundur here were battered by high tide when it reached parts of the village, last night.

The high tide, about 0.5m deep, however, only inundated two of the 15 houses.

Pulau Kundur village head Rosli Mat Hussin said the incident occurred at about 9.30pm and lasted till 2am this morning.

"A majority of the 50 occupants were resting in their houses when the high tide occurred.

"Villagers here have been facing many episodes of high tide during this monsoon season, but last night's episode can be described as among one of the big ones.

"Even the embankment built by the authorities could not hold the high tide, causing it to enter some parts of the village," he said.

Rosli said the affected villagers refused to be evacuated and remained at their homes last night.

Meanwhile, villager Nik Abdul Aziz Mamat, 65, said he and his four family members were at their home when the high tide occurred.

"It happened so fast... we could see the water slowly enter our house. While praying for our safety, we immediately moved our belongings to a safer place," he added.

The father of three said the incident was the fourth in the village in December alone.
