High tide, big waves wreck coastal areas in Penang

KUALA LUMPUR: Several parts of Penang Island, especially the coastal areas were hit by high tide and big waves reaching up to 3.5m today.

Strong winds were present in areas such as the Padang Kota Lama Food Centre, Jalan Gurney Drive, Pantai Bersih and a few other beaches.

Videos of the unusually big waves and its devastation on businesses operating near the coast were posted on social media.

One video was posted by Mamuking12 on his Tik Tok account this afternoon.

A few videos posted on the KiwiwiPenang (https://www.tiktok.com/@kiwiwipenang/video/7415485087371906322?_r=1&_t=8...) showed a restaurant by the coast being repeatedly hit by big waves at Pantai Bersih.

Footage showed the restaurant's green-coloured cement floor being badly cracked and it looked like erosion of some kind.

Each time the wave hit the premises, seawater entered the cracks.

A few restaurant workers were struggling to salvage items as waves kept crashing into the restaurant harder.

Tables and chairs at the restaurant were floating when the sea level rose even higher.

In another video, a premises owner opined that the unusual sea conditions might last for a few days due to the Supermoon September phenomenon.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) had earlier today issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds in several states in Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia until 10pm, including in Penang.
